Having taught for fifteen years in Turkey, I can see that many Turkish parents, children and even teachers for that matter share the same prejudices about science and engineering as you describe for Indian parents. Your discussion of these prejudices too reminds me of the way we deal with these questions and misperceptioms about STEM in our IB Theory of Knowlege course as well as in the subjects themselves, especially the similarities between science and art in the need for experimentation and the creative generation of new ideas and interpretations. I have also noticed that justifications for a greater emphasis on the arts are more persuasive with such parents when they are based on improved chances of being selected into more competitive colleges abroad than any improvement in the cognitive abilities of students, or the intrinsic value of imagination and emotion in the process of building knowledge.

Hi Payal,
You have once again proved that impeccable vision and your lucid approach in penning down the factual thoughts that undergoes in an individual's mind. I only desire that one day, we would be able to incorporate our thoughts of setting up an institute by providing the right guidance of knowledge and practice to every child born in this universe and take the educational field to a stable and mature stature.
Well done!
Dhan.

Thank you to all who contributed to this playful discussion. As creator of Play=Peace and a Jungian therapist who emphasizes the importance of play in all areas of life--in love (relationships), dreaming/visioning, work/career, and creating its so important to bring along a playful attitude and lighten up. Life doesn't have to be so serious, play in all you do and you and our communities globally will reap the rewards.

Hi,

This a lovely post on the challenges associated with 'Preschooling'! There is a wide gap between what is should be and what is. More than imparting knowledge per se it important for a teacher to understand the sensitivity of each child in the class. Teachers themselves must be role models for demonstrating a cheerful disposition and at no time succumb to irritation.

Lots of learning on this web site. Got here thru' Linked In.
